The new space includes several large rehearsal rooms, including a jazz rehearsal and performance hall, a large rehearsal hall for bands and orchestras, a medium rehearsal hall, and a percussion rehearsal room. Beneath the new rehearsal rooms is state-of-the-art technology for recording and mixing equipment for film and video music. There is also a new lobby, teaching studios, faculty offices, and 45 new practice rooms. The project also tackled issues involving sound transfer, poor lighting, and low ceilings. The concrete-poured addition features double walls and special light ballasts that will not emit sound. The overall result is a quiet, protected environment for interactive classwork, practicing, rehearsing, recording and performing that aids students in preparing and building successful careers. Flexible, 鈥渞ight-sized,鈥 and artistically and scientifically advanced, the new and renovated spaces are poised to meet the needs of nearly 70 full-time faculty, 600 full-time students working on music degrees and about 2,000 additional students participating in ensembles and classes.
